Why This Watch Matters Here is a simple, well-made, extremely well-designed dress watch from Junghans, a brand that made watchmaking an art in the mid-century period. The Full Story Junghans, a German manufacturer, dates back to 1861 and identified first as a clockmaker rather than a watch company. Even their partnership with the Swiss artist and designer Max Bill in the late 1950s started with a a kitchen clock and built in timer. Shortly thereafter, the two got together to create a wall clock and series of desk clocks. Lots of clocks. It wasn't until 1962 that a range of Max Bill designed wrist watches were even available. Junghans is really not your standard watch company, the brand has a discerning eye for design and aims to provide its customers with a well-made, well-thought out, and usable product, above all else. Even beyond the Max Bill watches, Junghans created simple watches with a focus on legibility. The example we have here is not one that Mr. Bill contributed but rather a more "main-line" Junghans. Still, we see the similarities in simple hour markers, a dial free of unnecessary clutter, and an unassumingly small signature tucked in at twelve. The watch wears closer to a piece of mid-century art than a wristwatch, and it works really well on the wrist. Sure the design is the real selling point for this Junghans but the condition is a nice side kick. With the original sticker still in great condition on the caseback, we can call this example nearly new old stock. The case is extremely sharp and the dial free of very much patina. The condition only makes the design better as the watch presents as it was intended to in every way, some 50-plus years later. We paired this Junghans with our Sedona strap in blue to bring a bit of color to the look. The dusty texture of the Sedona tones down the blue just enough, really it seems like the watch was meant to be paired with this strap. The case is overall crisp showing some light scratches and generally sharp edges. The caseback has its original sticker as well as crisp engravings. The sticker has shifted over a little bit and has some wear around the edges. The dial is overall clean with only a light patina. The applied hour markers have developed a light patina. The hands are in good condition with some patina. The luminous material on the dial and on the hands is full and has developed some patina. The dial, case, and movement are signed by Junghans. The crystal has some light scratches. This watch was photographed on a 175mm/6.9inch wrist.
