Why This Watch Matters Candino? Yeah, Adolf Flury-Hug's Candino. The Full Story Candino, while it may not ring a bell exactly, is still around today. Making watches in Switzerland is no small feat, sometimes the brand name just doesn't make it to the US market (where we are located) or stays in the proverbial shadows inexplicably. Adolf Flury-Hug (we just had to get that name on HODINKEE forever) founded the brand in 1947, right after WWII, in a small workshop off of his family home in Herbetswil, Switzerland. The brand, of course, grew from there and in 1989 built a large manufacturing facility right next to the family home and workshop, all of which still stand today. The Candino example we have here is one that we were immediately impressed with. The dail detail is similar to the finish you may find on a movement from Patek Philippe, a Côtes de Genève like look. Furthermore, the case has a well designed, yet funky overall shape that really plays with the light along with that dial. The whole watch is really stunning with a generally monotone vibe from the stainless steel and silvered dial. Oh, and it has a quick-set date. We paired this Candino with our Sedona watch strap in Slate Grey to play into that monotone silver or grey look, the pairing is really nice on the wrist. The case has remained strong, has scratches, and appears unpolished. The original finishes are clearly visible and crisp. There is some scratching on the back of the lugs from strap changing. The dial is in clean condition with a very light patina throughout. The applied hour markers have developed patina. The handset has developed patina overall. The lume on the dial and on the hands has developed patina and aged to dark color. The dial is signed by the maker and the movement, case, and crown are unsigned which is correct for this model. The crystal has light scratches. This watch was photographed on a 175mm/6.9inch wrist.
