Why This Watch Matters Let's go sailing. The Full Story A yachting timer is, quite possibly, the best example of purpose built, too; chronographs of the 1960s and 70s. These watches were made for a specific consumer and a specific purpose, to do one job. The purpose of yachting chronographs is to allow the skipper to keep track of the countdown period before a yacht race begins. The defining characteristic of this chronograph is the green, white, and blue "regatta start" minutes counter at three o'clock. This counter is divided into five-minute segments and allows the wearer to count down from 10 minutes, a period of significance in yacht racing, as boat captains are required to navigate their vessels to the starting line before the regatta begins. This counter is also in the "big eye" style, giving the dial an interesting and asymmetrical appearance. The Yachting Chronograph we have here is believed by some collectors to have been manufactured by Yema but little is known about the connection. Regardless, the watch is stunning with a deep black dial, multiple colors in the yachting timer sub-register, and an outer track that scales for "knots per cable." A cable is a nautical unit of measurement that is equal to one tenth of a nautical mile. So as you can see this watch was made with one purpose in mind, sailing. The case is strong with scratches. The chrome case shows little signs of wear. The edges of the lugs are clearly visible and sharp. The caseback engravings are visible including the numbers. There are a few caseback scratches from previous opening attempts. The dial is in great condition with a light patina. The hands are in great condition and have developed patina. The lume on the dial and hands have developed patina, aging to a pleasing creamy yellow color. There is a bit of lume loss on the dial, specifically at 9, 10 and 11 o'clock. The crown and pushers show some wear and has scratches. The movement and case are unsigned which is correct for this model. This watch was photographed on a 175mm/6.9inch wrist.
