The built environment demands almost half of the world’s extracted materials and waste from demolition and construction represents the largest single waste stream in many countries. A new model is emerging, one that moves away from this current ‘linear economy’, where materials are mined, manufactured, used and thrown away, to a more circular economy where resources are kept in use and their value is retained. For buildings, this means creating a regenerative built environment that prioritises retention and refurbishment over demolition and rebuilding. The new policies in the draft London Plan include a requirement to prepare a Circular Economy Statement to accompany all planning applications to the GLA. David has been working with the GLA to pilot and refine the guidance on circular economy statements, which has given us a unique insight into the requirements of the new statements. David’s presentation will cover the circular economy design principles for buildings; practical examples and case studies; and a brief summary of the requirements of the GLA Circular Economy policies. David is the author of Building Revolutions, a RIBA Publications book that explains how to apply the circular economy to the built environment. The hierarchy proposed in Building Revolutions is referenced in the latest London Plan consultation and he is currently working with the GLA to implement the Circular Economy Statement Guidance.
