Why This Watch Matters Here is some funky Girard-Perregaux vintage to brighten your day. The Full Story Girard-Perregaux was founded in 1791, and among the countless designs it has released over more than two centuries, some of its most famous creations include the three-bridge tourbillon and the Laureato sport watch series. When the Gryomatic was released in 1957, it was intended to be Girard-Perregaux's answer for a reliable automatic movement. Girard-Perregaux developed a system by which a self-winding module could be added to an existing manual movement. The system utilized a unidirectional winding system that relied on two "Gyrotron" wheels with rubies, instead of ball bearings, intended to prevent wear and friction. The 1970s was a very interesting era for watch design. Reflecting the state of the world, it was about being free, pushing the envelope, and challenging the status quo. The designs became more bold, and this example defines the best quality of 1970s design without going overboard. What we love about these more funky watches from the era are the expertly designed dials and details. Although the cases come in different shapes than we're used to and the colors may be unorthodox, the printing, layout, and markers of the dials were commonly refined and very well designed. The watch we have here is in overall great condition and has just an excellent case shape that takes over the total look of this watch in such a spectacular way. Somewhere between tonneau and cushion, the case really makes the watch here. That being said, the dial, hands, and hour markers really step up to the plate here drawing your eye even further. One last little detail here, this watch looks to have been a gift originally with an engraving on the caseback reading "Robert Beaver 25 Yrs. Loyal Service Rich Products Corp. 1974." Rich product indeed. We went with the Bedford strap in mint on this, a bold choice for a bold watch. The case has a few light scratches and handling marks. The bezel has a few marks. The caseback has a few scratches from opening but remains in crisp condition. The caseback engraving of the reference number is visible as is the personal engraving reading "Robert Beaver 25 Yrs. Loyal Service Rich Products Corp. 1974." The dial is in excellent condition with light patina throughout. The hands and hour markers have developed a light patina. The crystal has scratches. The dial, crown, case, and movement are signed by GP. This watch was photographed on a 175mm/6.9inch wrist.
