Ships from Marathon Key and Key West. 3/16" Mesh cast nets are for targeting 1" and larger baits, ie Glass Minnows, Majua, Small Pilchards. The smaller mesh also protects against "Christmas Treeing" your net by gilling a bunch of undersized baits that require a lot of time to clear. The smaller mesh also creates a softer closing which protects the scales by slowing draining of water around the baits when pulling in the net. Less scale removal means healthier baits. Smaller mesh nets will still catch larger bait but just have a slower descent. 1/4" Mesh cast nets are for targeting 2" and larger baits, ie Majua, Pilchards. The smaller mesh also protects against "Christmas Treeing" your net by gilling a bunch of undersized baits that require a lot of time to clear. Smaller mesh nets will still catch larger bait but just have a slower descent. 1/4" mesh is the best middle of the road size as it has a good balance of protecting against gilling smaller baits, but larger enough to have a good sink rate. Pilchards are the bread and butter bait in the Keys however they often come in all the different sizes in one school along side Glass Minnows which can be a big problem. 1/4" does a good size of filtering the smaller baits. 3/8" Mesh cast nets are for targeting 3" and larger baits, ie Pilchards, Mullet, Ballyhoo, Pinfish, etc. 3/8" is the industry average and the most cost effective to produce. They will work on most size baits around the US. It is the mid-size when comparing all sizes of nets that are available 3/16" - 1" mesh. It will work in the Keys, but you just have to be very careful when throwing on smaller baits.
