Why This Watch Matters The namesake of the Bund strap, this Heuer Bundeswehr offers a bit extra than usual as well. The Full Story The Heuer Bundeswehr Flyback Chronograph was made for the German Army between the 1960s and the 70s. While many variants of the classic Heuer "Bund" were made during this period, the "Sternzeit Reguliert" is among the most uncommon in today's vintage market. These extra words on the dial indicate that the watch was regulated to sidereal time, an astronomical system that was used in combat to ensure missiles were launched accurately. We're talking using the Earth's rotation in relation to distant stars in order to calculate time here – serious stuff. While our normal time-telling technique is, in very simple terms, based on the sun, sidereal time is based on the stars. The Bund Sternzeit Reguliert was issued to and used by the German Artillery corps who used the special regulation to accurately launch rockets. Functionally of note is the flyback movement, allowing for the timing of quick intervals. With the chronograph running, pressing the bottom pusher resets the function to zero and immediately restarts timing. Our example has been re-regulated to normal, civil time and is in stunning condition with a gorgeous lume patina as well as a very strong case. The caseback is marked "BUNDESWEHR" along with a serial number and a reference numbers are correctly stamped between the lugs. The case is very strong with some scratches and few light nicks. The bevels on the lugs and the brushed finishes on the caseband are visible. The back of the lugs have some scratches. The engravings on the caseback are all clearly visible and crisp as well as the numbers between both sets of lugs. The dial has developed a slight patina throughout but is generally very clean. The lume on the dial has developed patina and is a creamy off-white color. The lume on the handset has developed patina and has aged very similarly to that on the dial but with a bit of darkening near the edges. The paint on all the hands shows some signs of wear. The dial, case, and movement are all signed by Heuer. The crown is correctly unsigned. The bezel has light wear around the edge. The pushers are a bit tight but functional. The crystal has a few scratches. This watch was photographed on a 175mm/6.9inch wrist.
