Since 2005 she has co-led the contribution of the Packard Humanities Institute to the Herculaneum Conservation Project (HCP), one of the world’s most significant public-private partnerships for the archaeological heritage at the UNESCO site of Herculaneum (Italy). Within her key role in HCP, she also coordinated the 'Via Mare' initiative, aimed at enhancing and regenerating the boundaries between the UNESCO site, the modern city, and the surrounding natural landscape, by actively involving local communities. In parallel to her involvement at Herculaneum, Pesaresi's expertise has been sought after by prestigious organizations worldwide, such as the World Bank, the Getty Conservation Institute and the European Commission, where she has provided valuable input into major international programs. In addition to the activities in the field, she has been continuously involved in teaching and training, through her engagements with institutions such as ICCROM, the Getty Conservation Institute, various universities and foundations. In 2021, Paola embarked on a new journey, moving to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to join the Diriyah Foundation within the Diriyah Gate Development Authority. As the Heritage Management Senior Director, she assumed responsibility for the cultural and natural heritage of Diriyah, including the UNESCO site of At Turaif. In this role, she has overseen extensive archaeological and conservation activities while taking regulatory actions to ensure the protection of heritage in face of development. Since 2024 she moved to a new role within the Diriyah Foundation, focusing mostly on the long-term conservation of the UNESCO site of At-Turaif and of the archaeological site of Ghasibah. Rayana Albusaili She is an emerging conservation architect specializing in earthen architecture, with a focus on defensive and agricultural heritage structures that define the architectural legacy of Najd. With a Bachelor of Engineering in Architecture from Alfaisal University and as an alumnus of the Getty and ICCROM, Rayana brings a globally informed perspective to her practice. She began her journey by integrating heritage with architectural design during her time at Mimaria Architectural Consultants, where the philosophy of reviving cultural narratives through spaces that honor both tradition and innovation became a central theme—one that continues to shape her approach to conservation practices. Currently working with the Diriyah Gate Development Authority (DGDA), Rayana leads all heritage projects in Wadi Hanifah, applying an integrated approach to managing built structures, cultural landscapes, and archaeological sites. Her work delves into a holistic approach, incorporating the anthropological dimensions of heritage and uncovering the human narratives and cultural significance embedded within these environments. Her conservation philosophy ensures that heritage—whether expressed through historical architecture or the rich ecological and cultural landscape of Wadi Hanifah—is thoughtfully integrated into avant-garde design practices.
