This course will explore ethical practice through the lens of six intersecting and overlapping duties. It will cover the basic concepts and components of each duty and will also bring them to life through ethical dilemmas, considering possible courses of action before sharing views from others to provide further food for thought. Each module will introduce the behaviours which underpin ethical decision-making and ethical practice. Starting with a brief introduction to set the scene, and finishing with a short conclusion to tie the threads together this course will be split into the following four bite-sized modules:1. People and planet 2. Culture and clients 3. Professional and personal 4. Behaviours, frameworks and tools The first three modules will focus on the core aspects of the duties, pulling out key components and illustrating them through dilemmas, actions and views. They will also note the underlying behaviours which come to light, before the fourth modules takes a more detailed look at those behaviours, together with frameworks and tools which can help in practice where ethical dilemmas inevitably arise. This course draws on the RIBA Ethical Practice Guide and also supports the RIBA's Ethical Practice Knowledge Schedule.Learning outcomes• A thorough understanding of the 6 ethical duties of an architect, including how they intersect, overlap and interact with each other. This should include an understanding of how compromises may need to be made in practice, and how to approach balancing the requirements of the different duties and therefore the needs of different stakeholders. • An emerging understanding of the foundational behaviours which underpin ethical decision-making and ethical practice in different situations and across the six duties. • An awareness of a variety of views on the ethical duties and ethical dilemmas which arise in practice and an understanding of the importance of discourse and discussion in shaping ethical decision-making and practice and perhaps even reaching consensus on key ethical issues. • Some practical knowledge, skills and resources to support ethical decision-making in practice.
