Our beautiful notebooks feature images from our collections-historic and important works of zoological, entomological and botanical art that each tell a story. Butterflies – by Maria Sybilla Merian, a pioneering female naturalist who overcame adversity facing 17th century women to become a commercially successful painter and intrepid fieldworker among the first naturalists to draw insects in the field rather than from collected and preserved samples. Fern – Victorian ‘fern fever’ popularised these plants and botanical illustrations of them which advanced rapidly in the accuracy and detail of their presentation. New printing presses created new opportunities and the results were astounding. Octopus – A peoples favourite and the object of much study. This plate from Férussac and D’Orbigny’s Histoire naturelle générale et particulière des cephalopods… (1835–1848) is a glorious example from the Linnean Society collection. Toucan – Edward Lear often drew from live specimens, most well known for his parrots, but this lovely image of a toucan is a very special example and one of the most popular artworks in our shop.
