M981 The M981 Fire Support Team Vehicle (FISTV) was a specialized variant of the M901 Improved TOW Vehicle (ITV), developed to provide forward observers with a mobile, protected platform for coordinating artillery and mortar fire. Entering service in the early 1980s, it retained the M113 chassis but was outwardly disguised to resemble a TOW missile carrier in order to reduce its chances of being singled out on the battlefield. Instead of missile systems, the M981 carried advanced target acquisition equipment, including a Ground/Vehicular Laser Locator Designator (G/VLLD), thermal sights, and communications gear, allowing fire support teams to locate, designate, and call in precision indirect fires. The vehicle gave U.S. Army maneuver units a critical edge in coordinating timely and accurate supporting fires, though it was eventually phased out in favor of more modern digital systems integrated into the Bradley FIST and later platforms.
