Soapstone is a soft rock that is capable of being carved and etched to a great level of detail. These boxes are the tangible representation of the aesthetics of the Vietnamese people as well as the finest example of the talent of Vietnamese craftsmen. The soapstone used by these Vietnamese carvers is mined from the mountains of Quang Ninh province in Vietnam; this raw stone is carved, buffed, and painted to produce this complete masterpiece. Each of these products consists of a variety of colors and shades, lines and curves, shapes and sizes, designed with care by many different artisans. Every product takes hours to finish and ultimately become a one of a kind piece. Our soapstone products truly manifest the unique character of Vietnam you cannot find anywhere else. This soapstone box is of a variety called “painted” meaning the majority (background) is painted. Sometimes it may appear that there are blemishes on top of the paint, however this is due to the artists using a very thin paint that still allows the occlusions of the natural soapstone to show through, giving it more character. The design is 3D, thus protrudes out of the box to give it a lifelike design and feel. The box is completed with a hinge that allows it to be used with ease. Soapstone boxes, though rock, must not be dropped. With care they will not break but, like fine crystal, will, if improperly handled. It will be shipped to you securely in a padded box wrapped in bubble-wrap to ensure its safety. This box is available in three sizes; 25cm x 15cm x 6cm, 17cm x 12cm x 6cm, and 14cm x 9cm x 5cm.
