Following the publication of The Way Ahead, the RIBA’s Education and Professional Development Framework, the RIBA has released a pilot test for the first of its mandatory competences for members based on the RIBA Health and Safety Guide. In this series of five films, Dieter Bentley-Gockmann, EPR Architects, the author of the guide explains the background that has led to the RIBA publishing the guide and why the RIBA is introducing a test designed specifically for its members. Watching the films will give you an overview of the structure and content of the guide as well as help you to prepare for taking the test. SpeakerDieter Bentley-Gockmann Dieter graduated from the Welsh School of Architecture, Cardiff University in 1995 following which he has had a diverse architectural career, which has included acting as an expert witness, providing reports for the benefit of the Technology and Construction division of the High Court regarding architects’ professional standards and duties. Since 2005, Bentley-Gockmann has been a Director of EPR Architects and maintains its RIBA Chartered Practice membership, as well as chairing the RIBA’s regulations and Standards Group since 2019, having already been a proactive member of this group and its Health and Safety Advisory sub-group since 2013. Outside of his EPR Architects commitments Dieter has championed many successful initiatives, including working alongside the RIBA to develop a mandatory health and safety competency test for RIBA members. Bentley-Gockmann is also a member of the NLA Expert Panel on Technical Competency, a member of RIBA’s Plan of Work review group (2017-2020), co-chair of the RIBA’s Architects for Change (2012-2018), as well as being appointed as an Expert Advisor to the ARB to participate in a wider review of competencies for registered architects. Bentley-Gockmann is the author of the RIBA’s new handbook for embedding health and safety in design. The RIBA Health and Safety Guide is a companion guide that has been prepared to support members in maintaining their professional competency in health and safety.
