The keys are connected in a matrix format, requiring only 8 microcontroller pins (4 columns and 4 rows) for scanning.This keypad includes headers for easy breadboard hookup, requiring light soldering to attach. Alternatively, you can use plain wires. It's a sturdier version of our Membrane 3x4 Matrix Keypad.
