We’ve developed a series of interactive online events to provide a forum to discuss issues and problems that practices are facing as they navigate their way through the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. For this session we will focus on how to achieve sustainability in heritage buildings and meet the RIBA 2030 Challenge. Sarah Khan, Roger Mears Architects Sarah is a Partner at Roger Mears Architects. The practice’s core work is with traditional buildings of all types, including period properties, with many projects having won awards. Sarah is an Architect Accredited in Building Conservation (AABC) as well as a RIBA accredited Specialist Conservation Architect. Sarah Khan is also a RIBA conservation group panel member. She is currently leading the Practice’s research into sustainable upgrading of historic buildings. Dr Robyn Pender, Historic England Dr Robyn Pender works on the Building Conservation Climate Change Adaptation Team at Historic England, as a Senior Building Conservation Advisor. Her special expertise is in the physics behind building performance. Part of the team that pulled together Historic England's Practical Building Conservation books, Robyn was lead for the Building Environment, Metals, and Glass & Glazing volumes, and retains a strong interest in the behaviour of modern as well as traditional construction. Claire Hunt, Head of Landscape ADP Architecture Claire’s experience ranges from public realm projects to landscaping for schools and universities. Claire enjoys all aspects of her job role, but is particularly interested in biodiversity and sustainability – she loves getting other people enthused about these topics. She is also a visiting tutor on the Landscape Architecture course at Birmingham City University. Karen Turnbull, Sustainability Leader / Passive House Designer, ADP Architecture Karen is ADP’s sustainability leader. She has worked on a range of projects in the education, healthcare and commercial sectors, for both new build, refurbishment and heritage projects. She has a particular passion in refurbishment and retrofit projects as they form a critical strand in supporting the circular economy and addressing the climate crisis, in addition to providing multiple benefits through cultural, social and heritage value. She has championed a team within ADP to undertake the AECB CarbonLite Retrofit training and is supporting a range of projects in taking a holistic view of heritage projects, from addressing comfort conditions for building users to establishing appropriate fabric upgrade in solid wall buildings. Karen also leads a team of sustainability champions, with one in every studio creating a culture of sustainable behaviour and thinking, permeating throughout the practice. She is a BREEAM Assessor, BREEAM Advisory Professional, and Passivhaus consultant. A large proportion of her role is to support staff in developing sustainability strategies, supporting a holistic approach on projects, to enhance their environmental performance, covering low-energy performance, ecological improvement, and health and wellbeing.
