Differential Shim used within the differential case to set crownwheel-to-pinion backlash and carrier bearing preload during axle assembly. The shim is fitted between the differenti al carrier bearing and its housing, adjusting the lateral position of the crownwheel relative to the pinion so the gear mesh meets the specified backlash and tooth contact pattern. Selective shims of differing thickness are used to bring the mesh within tolerance when building or rebuilding the differential. Supplied as a single shim.
