1840-O Seated Liberty Half Dime, No Drapery variety, struck at the historic New Orleans Mint. This early branch mint issue represents a short-lived and highly collectible subtype in the Seated Liberty series. A solid collector piece for those building a Seated Liberty type set or seeking early Southern branch mint issues. The “No Drapery” design, used only briefly in 1840, lacks the additional folds of cloth at Liberty’s elbow seen on later issues, making it a key one-year subtype for type collectors. This example grades approximately Very Good (VG), showing honest, even wear from circulation. The date “1840” remains clear and bold, and the New Orleans “O” mintmark is visible beneath the wreath on the reverse. Major design elements are outlined, though finer details are worn smooth, consistent with the grade. Surfaces show typical marks and patina expected from a well-traveled 19th-century silver coin. Despite its wear, this coin retains strong historical appeal and is an affordable entry into early New Orleans Mint coinage and the desirable No Drapery subtype.
