DESCRIPTION This three piece dinner suit is of Swedish origin and was made by a firm named Er. Larsson, based in Älvdalen, a small community in central Sweden. It was bespoke tailored sometime during the 1910s or 1920s; unfortunately, it is not labelled with an exact year. At this time, garments were still relatively rarely marked with dates and names. The dinner jacket is made from a black wool cloth with a smooth handle and no pronounced texture. The jacket is single-breasted and fastens with a link button. The button is covered and patterned, typical of the period. It features horizontal piped front pockets and a slightly inward-slanted breast pocket. The angle of the breast pocket is highly characteristic of the era, not only for formal wear but for jackets in general. The lapels are wide and pointed, faced in black silk. The cuffs are finished with three covered and patterned buttons. The back is straight and has no vent. Internally, the jacket is fully lined and includes an inside pocket on the right-hand side. The sleeves are lined in a wide-striped cotton fabric. The waistcoat is single-breasted and fastens with four buttons, all of which are covered and patterned. All buttons throughout the suit are original. It has three pockets: one breast pocket on the left-hand side and two lower pockets, one on each side. The back features an adjustable buckle. Internally, the waistcoat is lined in the same fabric as the jacket sleeves. The trousers are flat-fronted with vertical front pockets. They feature external brace buttons at the waistband and a button fly. At the back, there is a small fishtail and an adjustable buckle. They also have a single piped back pocket on the right-hand side. Notably, the trousers do not have braid or silk side stripes; they are simply too early for this detail, as trousers of this period were made without them. In terms of condition, we assess the dinner suit as very good overall. There is some internal discolouration, primarily around the armholes of the jacket and waistcoat. However, there is no notable damage to the cloth, and the silk facings are in exceptionally fine condition. With dinner suits of this age, it is otherwise common to see significant wear to the silk; it should be borne in mind that this suit is over 100 years old. The minor defects present, limited to light discolouration, are not visible when the suit is worn. Please study the photographs carefully and form your own assessment of the condition. SIZE The sizing is somewhat complex, and we will explain the dimensions of each component as clearly as possible. The jacket corresponds to a modern EU 46 LONG (UK/US 36L). The waistcoat is considerably larger and corresponds to a modern EU 54 (UK/US 44); however, this is due to it having been let out and it could be relatively easily returned to its original size. The trousers fall somewhere between an EU 50 (UK/US 40) and an EU 52 (UK/US 42) when the rear buckle is fully released. This corresponds reasonably well with the jacket size, as the buckle is intended to be drawn in at the back. When adjusted, the trousers correspond to approximately an EU 46 (UK/US 36). In summary, this dinner jacket will fit best on someone who typically wears an EU 46 LONG (UK/US 36L). The waistcoat, however, will require alteration, as it will otherwise be too large if the other components fit correctly. Please scroll down for exact measurements and seam allowances.
