The Spirax Sarco 61685, also identified as the VS204 1/2" NPT, is a high-performance balanced pressure thermostatic air vent engineered for rigorous industrial steam applications. As a veteran technician knows, non-condensable gases are the enemy of heat transfer; this unit utilizes a precision-welded stainless steel bellows to automatically purge air from steam mains and high-point headers. Built with a rugged cast iron body (ASTM A126 Class B) and hardened stainless steel internals, the VS204 is rated for a maximum operating pressure of 250 psig and temperatures up to 450°F. Its self-adjusting design ensures rapid startup by discharging air at a rate of up to 380 scfm, then closing tightly when saturated steam reaches the element. This prevents water hammer and ensures peak thermal efficiency in heat exchangers, sterilizers, and jacketed kettles. Key Benefits for the Jobsite: Maximized Heat Transfer: Effectively removes insulating air pockets to ensure steam reaches the exchange surface at the proper temperature. Industrial Durability: Features a bolted cap and renewable internals, allowing for simplified inspection and maintenance without disturbing pipe connections. Versatile Compatibility: Fits standard 1/2" NPT pipe threads, making it a drop-in replacement for existing steam system air eliminators. Corrosion Resistance: Stainless steel internals prevent premature wear from the aggressive environment of high-velocity steam and condensate. Common Questions: Where should the VS204 be installed for maximum effectiveness? To ensure proper venting, install the unit at the high points of the piping or at the ends of steam mains where air naturally collects. For best results, use a 300mm unlagged pipe "bottle" to allow for a temperature gradient. Can this air vent be serviced while the steam line is active? No. Complete isolation of the line is required. However, the bolted cap design allows you to access and replace the valve head and seat element set without cutting or removing the main body from the piping. What causes an air vent to discharge steam continuously? This typically indicates a fouled seat or a failed thermostatic bellows. Periodically disassemble the unit to clean the valve head or replace the internal element to restore the tight-shutoff performance required for steam efficiency.
