Designed in the mid 1930s as a personnel transport for the German Army and Medical Corps, the Horch 1A (also known as the Horch 108) served until the end of World War II. Virtually all German combat units employed a Horch 1A, which was used to tow the 20mm FlaK 38 anti-aircraft gun. The Horch 1A had several ahead-of-its-time features, including four steerable wheels and two spare wheels mounted externally on rotating stub-axles, which helped prevent the chassis from "bottoming-out" when crossing rough terrain.
