We currently have the knowledge, technology, on site expertise and components to deliver to the highest standards in energy efficiency which are able to reliably reduce energy dema nd and carbon emissions by 80%. Clients are willing to invest, and more than 230 UK Councils have declared a climate emergency. And still, only 1% of current new builds achieve Passivhaus. This module will illustrate how architectural design decisions are closely interlinked with building physics, how they affect energy use, humidity, ventilation, comfort, air quality and particulate levels. Integrating ‘free energy/carbon savings’ into the design process will not only create heathier, more comfortable and lower energy buildings but also generate significant cost savings for clients during construction and operation. Using a wide range of inspirational projects, this module will illustrate the opportunities for energy efficient design solutions, which reduce carbon emissions from operation and construction and tackle fuel poverty at the same time, whilst enhancing occupants health and wellbeing. It will compare the different low carbon standards generally requested by clients, demonstrate key design opportunities for the architect throughout all RIBA stages and highlight useful design tools to assist designers to create more productive, healthier and more profitable spaces for their clients. The speaker will share his learnings from an architect’s perspective, having specialised in low energy, fabric first design rooted in building physics and having led on both mechanical and architect design services for some of the most energy efficient residential and commercial buildings in the UK. Tomas Gaertner Tomas is a qualified architect and a director of SE3D, an RIBA Chartered, design led practice specialising in human centred design. Since 2008, and being one of the first certified Passivhaus designers in the UK, he has been exclusively involved in human centred low energy building design rooted in building physics, including the UK’s first multi-residential certified Passivhaus and also the design of the UK’s first Passivhaus public pool and leisure centre. As a certified Building Biologist and founding director of the Building Biology Association, he oversees their UK seminar programme on healthy building.
