Nicknamed the "Fighting 69th," legend holds the name came from Robert E. Lee himself, after the regiment forced the retreat of the Confederate "Louisiana Tigers" at Malvern Hill in 1862. Their march is "Garryowen," and a Titanic survivor, Daniel Buckley, later served in the regiment during WWI.
