In South Carolina, counties were formed in 1785. The Court of Chancery kept all records for the state in Charleston District. Charleston Equity Records for the Court of Chancery or Court of Equity held Petitions. In order to preserve these records the archives laminated each page protecting them permanently. Petitions, which were done Ex parte (one sided, by only one individual) and were thought to be generally about guardianships or change of trustee have been overlooked by the genealogist. These documents have been found to be a valuable addition in discovering family relationships and a very important source for genealogists and historians. Some petitions have been found that make reference to a bill of complaint giving dates and describing earlier court cases involving deaths, wills, marriages, possessions, etc. There is no reliable index for these documents, thus making this transcription a wonderful source not only for South Carolina history, but for tracing the migration of families who moved elsewhere.
