The EMG-89 incorporates both single-coil and dual-coil pickups, each with its own independent output. The single-coil mode uses a stacked Alnico magnet EMG-SA design, while the dua l-coil mode consists of two Alnico magnet coils. The sound is designed to be nearly identical to the EMG-85. A push/pull volume (or tone) switch allows you to switch between the clear sound of a single-coil and the thicker sound of a humbucker.
