Date: Wednesday 15 June 2022 Time: 12pm-1:30pm Climate Literacy Framework The RIBA Steering Group will be publishing the Sustainability Briefing Toolkit in 2022 and continues to develop Client Adviser expertise in the critical and urgent issue of Climate Challenge. This module will focus on: How to support clients in defining holistic sustainable outcomes at stage 0 & 1 The 2030 Climate Challenge and its impact on significant changes to Built Environment Professional Practice This Module will capture the principles of: Social Value & participatory design Circular economy- resources & waste mitigation The value of nature centred design Maintain integral thread from “Stage 0 to Stage 7” of the RIBA Plan of Work Value led procurement Learning outcomes: The 2030 Challenge: Goals and Design Process Understand the requirements of RIBA’s 2030 Climate Challenge, its baselines and metrics and design processes that are needed to achieve 2030 targets Differentiate energy efficient design process from a more traditional design process Identify the specific characteristics of an energy-efficient and integrated design process such as: Outcome-based Design, Soft Landings, Building Performance Evaluations, Unintended Consequences and Contracts for Performance Understand the importance of energy analysis and assessment throughout the design process Who is it for? RIBA Client Advisers Architects Anyone with an interest in becoming a RIBA Client Adviser Speakers Mina Hasman, RIBA, ARB, LEED AP BD+C, WELL AP, BREEAM AP Mina Hasman leads SOM’s sustainability and wellbeing daily operations and long-term vision for achieving excellence in practice. She has experience in a wide variety of projects in UK, Europe, Middle East, and Asia, bringing a greater understanding of the implications for sustainable and equitable design in different climatic, social, and regulatory contexts. As a recognised expert in her field, Mina has been elected to, and is actively involved in the UKGBC’s Board of Trustees, the RIBA Ethics & Sustainable Development Executive Leadership Group, UNEP/GlobalABC’s COP Task Force (as the Commonwealth Association of Architects’ Focal Point), Construction Industry Council’s Climate Change Committee, WorldGBC’s Whole Life Carbon Committee, CIBSE Intelligent Buildings Group as Vice Chair, and IWBI’s Health Equity Advisory Group. Mina regularly contributes to the wider climate change, sustainability, and wellbeing debate in her role as tutor at various academic institutions, as well as regular speaking appearances at many international events. Duncan Baker-Brown, BSc. DipArch FRSA ARB RIBA Founder of BakerBrown, Climate Literacy Champion (Principal Lecturer) at the School of Architecture Technology & Engineering University of Brighton, Member of RIBA Council, Architects Climate Action Network (ACAN), Architects Declare Steering Committee, Member of Brighton & Hove City Circular Economy Oversight Board, Member of South Downs National Park Design Review Panel. Duncan is a practicing architect, academic and environmental activist. Author of ‘The Re-Use Atlas: a designer’s guide towards a circular economy’ published by RIBA, he has practised, researched, and taught around issues of sustainable development and closed-looped systems for more than 25 years. He recently founded BakerBrown, a research-led architectural practice and consultancy created to address the huge demands presented by the climate and ecological emergency as well as the challenges of designing in a post-COVID world. Over the years Duncan’s practices and academic ‘live’ projects have won numerous accolades including RIBA National Awards and a special award from The Stephen Lawrence Prize for the Brighton Waste House, where the prize money has since been used to set up a student prize for circular, closed loop design at the University of Brighton where Duncan teaches.
