When Eric Johnson got his hands on a 1959 reissue Les Paul, he asked us if we could get a sound like an old Gretsch Country Gentleman. We quickly designed pickups that could be use d to replace standard humbucking pickups, and they were very bright, with a high-frequency response that didn't lose its tone. Eric Johnson also commented that "it has a clear sound just like a Stratocaster." At the same time, he was surprised at how the sound doesn't get buried even at hard distortion settings, and how a clear overdrive sound can be obtained. [TECH TALK] If you look at the DC resistance specs of these pickups, you'll see that they're very similar to PAF®-style models. These have less power and much more treble response than "vintage" humbuckers. However, their performance differs significantly in two key areas. In fact, the high-frequency response is comparable to a typical single coil, but the low-frequency response is fuller and more like a humbucker, so it doesn't sound thin. It responds perfectly to chords and fingerpicking, so even with heavy distortion your solos won't get drowned out.
