A & F Drum Co., a handmade drum company based in Austin, Texas, designs and manufactures innovative drum sets, snare drums, hardware, cymbals, percussion, and more, blending the world's traditional drum-making craftsmanship with the new sound and look that the drum and percussion world is seeking. In 2003, Ramy Antoun, president of A & F Drum Co., was selected as the drummer for Seal, and he set out to create a sound using acoustic drums that would emulate the electric loop sounds featured on the album. In pursuit of this kind of drumming, I tried out various models, and eventually found a banjo from the 1920s. I disassembled it, and came across a thin, shallow brass shell. I sandwiched the shell between two REMO drumheads and two vintage brass single hoops on the striking and snare sides, and used hooks on both the top and bottom, eliminating the need for lugs and allowing tuning with a single tension rod. In just 10 minutes, I had my first pancake snare drum complete. The 1.5-inch deep, hand-molded low brass shell, paired with a single hand-molded brass hoop, creates a snare drum with a crisp, full-bodied, and powerful sound that is ideal for music with a predominantly electric sound. The high-pitched tuning, in particular, produces a brilliant, clear sound with a sense of overtones, and it has enough volume to be used as a main drum. Each drum shell is hand-cut, rolled, welded, and sanded. Its unique, patented oxidation process creates a patina that lasts for ages. It's then finished with a straight 45-degree edge cut, resulting in a warm, powerful tone. ＜Shell & Hardware Finish＞ The raw (unpainted or plated) finish on the shell and hoops gives it a worn look, and the hook-type tension bolts give it an appearance reminiscent of antique furniture. *When attaching the hoop to the drum head, the head will protrude slightly. This is due to the fact that the shell and hoop are made smaller in accordance with A & F Drum Co.'s philosophy of sound and appearance, and is not a defect. *The roundness of the shells and hoops is lower than that of major drum manufacturers, but this does not affect the sound and is not a defect.
