Echoes that seem to disappear into the mysterious mist When Catalinbread began developing Echorec, the pedal that garnered worldwide attention for its reproduction of the legendary disk echo, they also began work on recreating the oil can echo. Development of this pedal, which would later be called Adineko, began in the summer of 2012. To discover the true sound, they used numerous vintage units and conducted day-in and day-out research. Not only were the tones of each unit different, but there were also units whose sound changed from day to day, and even from hour to hour. The ultimate oil can echo tone under ideal conditions. Cool, bright, and dark at the same time. The vibrato modulation caused by the vibration of the oil and the unique, misty sound of oil can echo. The Adineko is a delay pedal that achieves all of this while maintaining the echo time and repeats that a modern compact pedal should. The Adineko case is finished with an aged finish reminiscent of the oil cans found inside vintage oil can echoes. The paint gives the appearance of thin rust, recreating the feel of a vintage echo machine. *The aged paint is applied by hand one by one, so each one has a different look. Whenever we create a new pedal that recreates a vintage sound, we at Catalinbread strive to respect and expand upon our previous experience, and of course, the Adineko is no exception. For example, the VISCOSITY knob controls the distinctive dark tone created by oil whose viscosity changes over time or due to heat. The TIMING knob controls delay times that far exceed the realm of traditional oil can echoes while maintaining a warm echo quality. And the BALANCE knob recreates the unique syncopation created by the dual playback heads of the original echo unit. ●Quick Start If you're getting your first Adineko, try using just this pedal to clean up your amp and get some sound. Adineko reproduces the tone of an oil can echo, but it's designed to go beyond the realm of the original unit while maintaining that tone. If you were to replicate the operating range of the original oil can echo unit with Adineko, you would end up with the following settings. TIMING: 9-10am VISCOSITY: 9-10am REVERB: Setting just before self-oscillation BLEND: 12 o'clock BALANCE: 12 o'clock The Original Oil Can Echo is a unit that can only create short delays with two taps (repeats). However, you can experience a mysterious and beautiful delay sound that fades into the mist of a vibrato that synchronizes with the delay time and a reverb sound that is on the verge of self-oscillation. If you want a Tel-Ray Deluxe Organ tone with a bit more vibrato, turn down the REVERB and turn up the BLEND. Details of each control BALANCE: The original unit was equipped with two echo playback heads, short and long, which could be selected with two slide switches or a rotary switch. You could select either or both of these heads, and you could also combine the two heads to create unique syncopation. The Adineko takes this a step further, allowing you to freely adjust the balance, creating completely new rhythmic tones. Turning this knob counterclockwise will give you more of the short delay time head, while turning it clockwise will give you more of the long delay time head. At the 12 o'clock position, the two are output in equal balance. BLEND: This control adjusts the dry/wet balance between 100% wet (the entire effect) and 100% dry (the input signal). The original unit had a tube preamp stage, and the Adineko preamp stage has been tuned to replicate that sound. Timing: Most oil can echoes have a fixed delay time. Some models allow you to change the delay time by slowing down the motor, but either way, the delay time that an oil can echo unit can create is very short, between 80 and 120 ms. Adineko allows you to set the delay time up to 1 second by adjusting the TIMING knob. VISCOSITY: To understand this control, you need to understand how the original oil can echo unit worked. Imagine a slowly rotating metal disk inside an oil can. This disk maintains the electrostatic charge from the record brush head until one or two playback heads pick up the sound. If the can is empty, static electricity would build up inside, so the can is filled with a mysterious oil. This oil is mostly Union Carbide LB-65, and for many years, there have been rumors that this oil is carcinogenic. Regardless, the oil's role was to prevent static electricity from building up in the air. The problem with this oil is that if its viscosity decreases, for example, due to heat, it can no longer maintain its charge. The less viscous the oil is, and the more the oil oscillates, the more the timbre becomes turbulent. In other words, this control adjusts the depth of modulation. REVERB: This knob acts like the repeat control on an echo unit. It routes the delay line output to the delay line input. Like the original oil can echo, Adineko's repeats can be modulated, making them even more lo-fi, creating a repeat sound similar to the original.Adineko is powered by a 9-18V center negative DC adapter.
