Very rare and original CDV format photograph of Kuroda Nagatamo (1838-1902), signed to Miss Lewis on the back and dated 1874. Photographed by Allen & Rowell of Boston. Kuroda was a Japanese samurai of the late Edo period, who served as the last daimyō of Fukuoka han, a Japanese domain of the Edo period. Nagatomo Kuroda, along with fellow samurai Takuma Dan, and Kentarō Kaneko, on orders of their samurai lord, arrived in Massachusetts from Fukuoka, Japan in March 1872, and attended MIT in Cambridge.
