Used item now in stock! -Lang Percussion- Lang Percussion is a drum manufacturer based in Brooklyn, New York City, USA, known primarily for restoring and customizing vintage drums, as well as for making exact replicas of legendary drums made by Billy Gladstone. -Billy Gladstone- Billy Gladstone was a leading professional drummer active in New York in the 1930s and 1940s. He was a rare individual who demonstrated exceptional talent in many areas: as a drum maker, an original inventor, and a drum teacher. His outstanding playing technique has been praised by many masters, including Buddy Rich, Louis Bellson, and Joe Morello, and is known as the "Gladstone Technique." Even after retiring from his gigs in New York, Gladstone devoted much of his time to drum building. His snare drums, featuring his patented "Three Way Tuning" tuning system, were meticulously crafted with meticulous attention to detail by a technically and musically perfectionist. While only a handful of the original drums remain, they remain legendary and coveted by drummers today. The design survived for many years after Gladstone's death and was faithfully reproduced by Morris "Ernie" Lang, a percussionist with the New York Philharmonic who studied with Gladstone. -Billy Gladstone Cocobolo Solid Shell Snare Drum 14''x7'' 3-Way Tuning- This snare drum features Gladstone's greatest feature, Three Way Tuning, and is reproduced with deep respect for the quality and detail of the original. It has a solid (single-ply) cocobolo shell with solid cocobolo reinforcement. The original snares were said to be 6 or 7 inches deep, and this one is manufactured to be 7 inches deep. The 45-degree bearing edge and deep-cut snare bed are cut using a proprietary special machine, and all hardware other than the hoop is an original design manufactured by Lang Percussion. It combines original functionality with beautiful design, and the gold-colored parts harmonize with the grain of the cocobolo, creating a snare drum with artistic elegance. The shell is made from extremely hard and dense solid cocobolo wood, which produces a clear, core-like sound image, a low, stable tone, and quick response and decay. What makes it stand out is the extremely sensitive and agile response of the snare, which reproduces the player's subtle sticking, touch, and dynamics to the fullest. The tone can be freely controlled thanks to the original design inner muffler mechanism. -Three Way Tuning- In 1937, Billy Gladstone patented a drum tuning mechanism. Original heavy-duty tension rod tube and tube holder are used. A special three-pronged key attached to the shell allowed the top and bottom heads to be tuned separately or simultaneously from the top of the drum. This clever mechanism saved the performer time by eliminating the need to flip the drum over or reach under the drum to tune the snare side head. The 3-way key has three differently shaped keys, each of which can be adjusted as follows: Hexagonal head: Adjust the top head. Square head: Adjust the bottom head. Hex and Square Combo Head: Adjust both heads at the same time. -Throw off- The original design does not use springs or rods, allowing for easy operation with your fingertips. The artistic design is also appealing. -Muffler- It features a highly versatile and practical built-in muffler. Made from a slender yet sturdy brass rod, it features a guitar tuner-like mechanism for fine-tuning your tone. The knob on the right side of the throw-off adjusts the built-in muffler, and the numbered gauges allow you to return to the same tuning with just a flick of your finger. -Hardware- All hardware, except for the hoop, is original and manufactured by Lang Percussion.
