Lightweight and soft poplar wood is often used in shell plies between other woods because it gives the sound a fatter tone. This model uses poplar wood plyed to a slightly thicker thickness, combined with maple wood on the outside, black paint on the inside of the shell, and 2.3mm thick steel stick saver hoops (inward-curving hoops) to keep the sound from scattering too much. At the moment of impact, it exhibits a thick, fat sound characteristic, but its rapid decay also gives it a dry impression.
