Author: Carlo GiannascaWhen people cannot find their way, they suffer. Not metaphorically. Their confidence turns to anxiety, and the institution that built that place has failed t hem, regardless of what the architecture cost.Carlo Giannasca has spent four decades arguing that wayfindingis not a finishing touch. It is a fundamental dimension of how peo- ple experience the built environment, and a discipline whose value depends entirely on when it enters the design process. This book makes that case with rigour and without apology. It is written for practitioners who want to understand how the discipline works, and for clients who need to know what good wayfinding requires, when to commission it, and what it costs to get it wrong. The buildings that work are the ones where someone asked the right questions at the beginning. This book contains those questions.Carlo Giannasca is a Partner and Chief Operating Officer of Frost*collective, one of the world’s most respected strategic, creative studios. Over four decades, he has led wayfinding and environmental design projects across someof the country’s most significant hospitals, cultural institutions, urban precincts and corporate environments; including Barangaroo, Sydney Northern Beaches Hospital, Qantas Headquarters and Sequis Tower in Jakarta. He studied Visual Communications at Sydney College of the Arts, graduating in 1985. After a brief start in advertising, he joined Emery Vincent Design in 1987, spending the first month working in the Melbourne studio under Garry Emery, one of the defining figures of Australian graphic design. He remained with the practice for sixteen years, through its evolution into Emery Frost when Vince Frost joined the partnership in 2003. Thoseyearsestablishedthefoundationofhis approach: rigorous typography, Swiss modernist discipline, and a conviction that designed form should serve the person encountering it, notthe designer producing it. He is a sought-after speaker at universities and design conferences worldwide and has presented on global wayfinding methodologies at the SEGD. The Art + Science of Wayfinding is his first book.ISBN 9780646739144. Frost*collective. hb. 304 pages. 22 x 28 cm.not yet published Show more
