First published in 1958, The Birth of Nigeria's University tells the story of how Dr Kenneth Mellanby, the `Principal Designate', acquired five square miles of unsurveyed bush, and created there what is now accepted as one of the leading universities in Nigeria. Although Dr Mellanby modestly disclaims much of the credit for this achievement, it is realised in university circles that it was his energy and enthusiasm that was largely responsible for the rapid growth of University College, Ibadan, and for the high academic status it has now achieved. The book is the story of a successful struggle against many difficulties, including bad planning by experts in Britain and Africa, `red tape', indifference and procrastination. The author shows how it was impossible to divorce higher education from politics. He pungently but good humouredly criticises many well-known figures in the educational and colonial worlds. Race relations play a large part in this story and the author paints a picture of black and white races working together as equals.
