He meets strong, independently minded locals including lifeboat crew member Laura Clift; his neighbour, the eccentric retired Naval Admiral; and his housekeeper Jasmine, who has a husband serving time in Dartmoor prison. Adam becomes involved in events at the core of coastal community life. He joins the lifeboat crew where he experiences high drama and deep tragedy. He is also drawn into the darker side of Daymouth life involving drugs and migrants, resulting in tension and uncertainty about who is involved.
