Second Lieutenant Thomas Oscendale of the Military Foot Police fights alongside the soldiers as they come ashore at Y Beach on the Gallipoli peninsular. The novel later moves on to Ypres in 1917. Oscendale is a thoughtful detective who fights against the brutality he sees all around him during WWI to bring a killer to justice and to solve the mystery surrounding the reason for the murders.
