It is 1940, the first hot summer of the War. In the mining valleys north of Cardiff, Robert, Freddo and Aldo escape the day to day drudgery of rationing and blackouts with a carefree afternoon swim in the old abandoned quarry. But then the evacuees arrive. Robert's Mam has offered to take one in - Reg, and right from the start he makes enemies of Robert and his friends. When there's news that Italy might be joining the War as a German ally, Reg wastes no time in turning on Aldo and Freddo. They're Italian, their parents run the Italian cafe in the village, and now they're afraid, especially when Reg hints of what may happen. But Robert has his own problems: his dad's ship has been involved in battle and there's been no news - his Mam is worried sick. Plus he has to share a room with Reg, who seems to be fighting a war all of his own.
