The Rhinog mountains form the distinctive ridge which can be seen to the left of the A470 when you emerge from the forest above Ganllwyd travelling north. Although not as high as the better-known peaks further north, the Rhinogs nevertheless constitute one of the wildest regions of Snowdonia. The scenery is spectacular and, because there are no roads over the ridge, the area surrounding this has retained its remoteness. Indeed, as a result of its bronze age sites, medieval roads and houses, gold and manganese mines, even wild goats, the area has a sense of mystery which is unique in Wales. The walks described here are concentrated to the east, with some walks to the north and south, of the main Rhinog ridge since walks on the coastal side of it are explored in other books in this series. The walks are readily accessible from Bronaber and Trawsfynydd, while the larger centres of Dolgellau and Porthmadog are a short distance away using the A470 or a combination of the A487 and A470. Any of these walks can be undertaken by a reasonably fit person although a few require good visibility when attempted. The location of each route is shown on the back cover and a summary of the main characteristics and approximate length of each is shown on a chart. An estimated duration is also given but it is best to allow longer in order to linger over the many fine views and interesting places visited whilst on the walks. Each walk has a map and description which enables the route to be followed without further help.
