The Heart of Wales Railway links Shrewsbury to Swansea and, on the way, passes through some of Wales’ most stunning scenery. As well as being a spectacular journey, the line provid es access to splendid walking country, and gives you the opportunity to reach the start of each route without the use of a car. From Shrewsbury in the north to the line’s southern terminus at Swansea these walks provide a wide range of opportunities, ranging from town and riverside explorations to more adventurous excursions into the mountains. Any of these walks can be undertaken by a reasonably fit person, with only one being more than moderately challenging. The location of each walk and its station starting point is shown on the back cover, and a summary and the length of each is given on a special chart on the inside back cover. An estimated duration is also given for each walk, but for those who enjoy fine views and like to linger over them, or to explore the attractions visited, it is best to allow longer. If you are travelling by rail, it is essential that you check the timetable, to ensure you have allowed sufficient time to meet the train for your return journey. Each walk has a map and description which enables the route to be followed without further help, but always take account of the weather and dress accordingly, especially if you are exploring the higher routes.
