THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD: PRAYERS TO OUR LORD AND SAVIOR JESUS CHRIST, translated by Very Rev. Archimandrite Maximos Constas, is a collection of thirty prayers to Jesus Christ, along with a concluding prayer to God the Father. Intended as a companion volume to Mother of the Light: Prayers to the Theotokos,the prayers to Christ collected in this volume are remarkable for the intensity of religious feelings they express, as well as for their strongly compunctive and confessional character. These prayers are the work of some of the greatest Fathers of the Church, including St John Chrysostom, St Gregory the Theologian, St Maximos the Confessor, St Symeon the New Theologian, and St Gregory Palamas. The volume contains an introduction by the translator, the Very Rev. Archimandrite Maxmos Constas, Dean of Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology, who places these prayers within the larger context of Christian experience and the life of the Church.
