As part of the Fauna of the Czech Republic edition, after twenty years, the third, supplemented and revised edition of the volume Birds 1 (orders of Anseriformes, Podicipediformes, Procellariiformes, Gaviiformes, Phoenicopteriformes, Ciconiiformes, Charadriiformes, and Pelecaniformes) is being published, this time focused solely on the territory of the Czech Republic. The intention to publish this work again is supported both by the interest of the general public and, above all, by the current situation, where after intensive ornithological research in recent decades, so many new and significant findings have accumulated not only from the fauna and biology of birds but also unexpected and new perspectives on their system and a number of taxonomic problems that required fundamental revisions, especially of the general chapters to modern knowledge of this group of vertebrates. The main changes in this second reissue concern both the general introduction, where especially new findings in molecular taxonomy and systematics required deeper interventions throughout the text, and the processing of individual species, which, according to the established scheme (synonymy, taxonomy, species distribution, description, dimensions, weight, identification in nature, occurrence in the Czech Republic, migration, habitat, nesting, food, significance, parasites, and the most important literature) takes into account significant changes in the distribution and abundance of many species.
