One of the popular definitions of life states that it is a series of continuously following greater or lesser troubles. We brush off the smaller ones, we call the bigger ones worries, and the really big ones are labeled as crises. In drama, a crisis signifies a turning point when a previously calm narrative suddenly takes a turn. Life is similar. Moreover, we often lack the resources, experience, and time. Some crises are unavoidable and even predictable (adolescence, midlife), but most catch us off guard, although in hindsight, we see that our lives were heading towards them. Some could even be prevented if we noticed the warning signs in time and acted accordingly. This is the subject of the publication by the author duo of psychiatrists Radkin Honzák and Vladimíra Novotná, who have rich experience with crises and their consequences from both clinical and counseling practice. The text describes step by step the anatomy of a crisis, ways to resolve it at various stages, and the most common types of life upheavals. It also provides examples of societal crises that allow for better orientation in uncertain times. The book serves as a guide for everyday use as well as a manual for those of us engaged in helping or support roles.
