Aortic regurgitation is one of the basic heart valve defects and is closely associated with the occurrence of dilatation of the ascending aorta. Only in recent years has traditional surgical treatment with valve replacement been enriched by a systematically developed strategy for valve-sparing reconstruction. The monograph by authors from the Cardiac Surgery Clinic in Hradec Králové, with the participation of an international team of co-authors, provides a comprehensive picture of this heart defect. The book describes, among other things, the anatomy, possible anomalies, pathophysiology, modern concepts of dynamic function of the aortic root, as well as the possibilities of quantifying the significance of the defect using echocardiography and cardiac catheterization, as well as CT and MRI. Detailed echocardiographic analysis is an essential prerequisite for preparing a plan for further action. In the next part of the publication, all treatment methods are presented, and the reader will also find an explanation of geometric principles and interpretation of echocardiographic findings.
