The textbook summarizes the basic knowledge from the fields of microbiology, immunology, epidemiology, and hygiene, which are mutually interconnected disciplines. It is particularly suitable for students of secondary and higher medical schools, where these subjects are often combined into one course – thus providing a comprehensive overview of the topic. The first part of the publication divides and describes individual microorganisms, their structure and functioning, and subsequently the possible reactions of the macroorganism to pathogenic stimuli. The epidemiological section, which is divided into general and special, addresses the process of disease spread and then describes individual infectious diseases. The hygiene chapter focuses on the various subfields of this discipline, particularly the hygiene of healthcare facilities and its importance in the prevention of nosocomial infections.
