Why do we behave the way we do? This question has been attempted to be answered by many researchers, and the variety of ways in which it can be approached suggests that it is a very complex task. Some focus on neurobiology, others concentrate on hormones, some prefer genes, while others prioritize upbringing or other environmental influences that have been affecting us directly or indirectly since the moment of conception. However, all of these are just boxes that together form a single whole. This is unraveled in his monumental book by American biologist Robert Sapolsky, who introduces readers to the origins of our behavior from the first seconds, where the activity of various areas of the brain plays a key role, through hours to days, where essential hormones are crucial, to thousands and millions of years during which evolution has shaped our behavior. However, the author does not limit himself to a bare biological description and demonstrates that countless factors influence our behavior, many of which we are often unaware of, and through which our apparent rationality can be easily manipulated, often with tragic consequences. However, if we become aware of our weaknesses and strengths, we can at least attempt to act correctly, even though it is often not easy at all.
