The Scottish Enlightenment represents a fascinating chapter in European cultural history. Its influence can be compared to similar movements in France or Germany. The texts of intellectuals active in Scotland, such as David Hume, Adam Smith, Thomas Reid, Francis Hutcheson, or Alexander Gerard, were read and discussed not only in the rest of Great Britain but also in France and Germany, with a lasting impact. In this book, you will find four separate smaller and larger studies on the topics of Thomas Reid's philosophy that could attract the interest of our academic community and students. The first introduces readers to Reid's life and work in the closest context and focuses on explaining his position as the head of the Scottish school of common sense. The second chapter addresses Reid's critique of Hume's philosophy. The third attempts to clarify Reid's treatment of the central concept of his philosophy, namely common sense. The last and longest text highlights a particularly overlooked area of Reid's philosophy, namely his aesthetic theory.
