The narrator of the acclaimed Nordic novel Silence is an aging woman who has been paralyzed by deep grief following her husband's death. In her memories, she sifts through their shared years, recalling her husband's optimism and cheerful nature. He was the one who brought light into her life, providing support and comfort when her worries about the children became overwhelming or when anxiety struck her. The man is gone, yet their now-adult children constantly come and do not leave her alone with her memories and sorrow. Susanne Skogstad describes, in a concise yet lyrical language, the story of a human life and portrays the contradiction between a past filled with love and a present filled with sadness and loss. From the perspective of an aging woman, she writes about loneliness, the search for meaning in life, and the longing for belonging. She also tells of the inseparable bond between two people that even death cannot sever.
