Needlework pocketbooks, often called “worked” pocketbooks, were popular from about 1740 until 1790, and were used by both men and women to carry valuables. A short essay on embroid ered pocketbooks is included in the product. This design is an adaptation of an antique queen-stitched pocketbook that I bought at an antiques show. I used the same shape, ribbon closure, and motifs as on my antique, but I changed the thread colors. My adaptation is only slighter smaller than the original.The model was stitched on 32-count Toasted Almond linen from Zweigart, Inc., using DMC embroidery thread and overdyed threads from The Gentle Art (Sampler Threads).
