It handles emergency circuits, code-mandated standby systems, and optional standby loads — covering most application types you'll encounter in the field. The switch operates electrically and latches mechanically in both the normal and standby positions. That means even a complete loss of control power won't cause it to drift out of position. A break-before-make switching action is enforced at both the mechanical and electrical level, so there's no path for the utility and generator to become paralleled — even briefly. Heads Up — Updated Breaker Ratings: Cummins issued revised Withstand Closing Breaker Ratings for the entire Spec C product family in September 2025. What's New in the Spec C Three meaningful upgrades separate this generation from its predecessors. First, the controller has been updated to the PC40-11 platform, which brings a more capable interface and expanded communication options. Second, voltage imbalance sensing has been added — the switch can now detect unbalanced three-phase conditions on either source, not just over/under voltage. Third, phase rotation monitoring is built in, which matters particularly when a generator is first commissioned or after service work. The PC40-11 Controller The brains of the switch is a microprocessor-based controller with a backlit LCD and soft-touch buttons. Configuration can be done at the front panel or through a connected PC. Out of the box it communicates over Modbus RTU and TCP, supports configurable I/O, and includes a programmable exercise scheduler. If you need more output contacts, expansion modules can be added later in the field — one module adds 8 configurable contact sets, two modules gives you 16. An Ethernet module, remote annunciator, and RS-485 Modbus option are also available if the project calls for them. Contact and Arc Management The main contacts are silver alloy under high contact pressure, which keeps resistance low and resists the pitting that degrades switching performance over time. Separate arcing contacts take the brunt of each operation, protecting the main contacts from arc damage. Once an arc forms, a stack of arc chutes cools and extinguishes it quickly. The net result is a mechanism rated under UL 1008 for high-endurance duty — meaning it's tested and listed to handle the full switching load expected over the life of the equipment, not just a sampling of light-duty cycles.
