Judean Aramaic is the name given to the Aramaic dialect written by Jews in Judea between the Maccabean Period and the Bar Kokhba revolt. Until a generation ago, very little was known of this dialect since our only sources were sparse literary remains, such as Megillat Ta'anit and fragmentary Aramaic texts in the Mishna and the Tosefta. The discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls in 1974 led to intensive surveys in the region during which caves containing Aramaic texts from the first and second centuries C.E. were discovered. Additionally, a considerable number of epigraphic texts have recently been re-edited by Ada Yardeni whose work forms the basis of this dictionary. The dictionary will be of interest to scholars and students of the Aramaic language and the history of Eretz Israel in the Second Temple and the post Second Temple Periods.
