AA Badenhorst Caperitif is a South African aromatised fortified wine made from Chenin Blanc (sometimes with a little Muscat) from Kalmoesfontein in the Swartland. Expect a copper‑o range hue and heady aromas of orange blossom, bitter orange and grapefruit zest, dried apricot and fig, cinnamon, clove, ginger, mint, tree bark and wild herb notes. The palate is moderately sweet yet briskly bitter, with dried citrus, stone fruit, spice and a long, quinine‑tinged, refreshing finish. Delicious over ice with a slice of lemon, lengthened with soda, mixed with tonic, or used instead of vermouth in classic cocktails; it also works with orange‑based desserts, blue cheese and salty snacks.
